How to Make your own Comet

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Hey kids! It’s time for some space watching tonight! Do you like to explore planets, galaxies, and stars? Well today, you can make your own comet!

To give you some idea how a comet looks like, you can try watching the darkest part of the sky and see if you can see a meteor (shooting star). There are some in the evenings, but serious star watchers should get up very early (4am) for the best show.

Now after watching the stars, it’s time to make you own comet or falling star!
Here’s how:

1. Get the materials (with the help of mom or dad!)

  • 2-inches Styrofoam Ball
  • 6 lengths of curling ribbon – about 3 feet long
  • straight pin with pearl like top
  • glue
  • aluminum foil

2. Cut the curling ribbon then, tie together at one end and cut off excess (short end).
3. Poke a hole in the Styrofoam ball with a pencil.
4. Put a little glue in the hole.
5. Put the tie end of the ribbon into the hole and place it with the pin.
6. Cut a piece of foil to cover the ball while allowing the comet’s tail (ribbon) to come out of the foil.

And the, tada! You’ve got yourself your very own comet!
Happy Star Watching!

LOST COLORS

Monday, March 29th, 2010

What happened to the World of ActionJetz? Has it lost all its colors? You bet!

But don’t worry kids, here’s the good news! We have a new Adventure Quest this March until next month. You’ve got to help the people of the AJ World to find the missing flashlight. It looks like the flash light is the key to the missing colors of AJ.

Here’s what these mimes are telling us:

“The world turning to black and white? We mimes are partly to blame. We were using this flashlight that changes the colors for a light show included in our routine but it broke. While looking for a way to fix this mess we lost the said flashlight, and now we do not know where to start looking.”

How to Teach your Dog to Play Frisbee

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Howdy, Pilots! Do you know the newest game here in ActionJetz? Our AJ Scientists are cooking up some cool and exciting game called “Dog Fight!” But before you click on play, let me just help you teach your dog to play Frisbee!

It’s pretty easy you see, all you need to do is to Head out to the park or your backyard, as long as you have lots of space, and most of all, have fun!

Come On in My Kitchen
Your dog will dig his disk if you put his food in it. Take the platter away when he’s finished eating so that it doesn’t become a chew toy.

Shake, Rattle and Roll.
When your pup feels peppy, get down on his level and talk excitedly to him. Then roll and shake the disk.

Fakin’ It.
Still at your dog’s level, fake tossing or rolling the disk. When he realizes he’s been duped and starts to run for the toy, hold it out. After he grabs it, give a tug to make sure he is holding it firmly. Then praise him. Do this several times.

How to Build a Spring Camp and Eat S’mores!

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

It’s Spring time kids! I’m sure you’re ready to play outside and have fun with your friends :)

Everyone seems to be enjoying the sun, so why don’t you make your own Spring Camp at your very own backyard! Don’t snob it pilot! This is fun because your friends are coming over, and you’ll be eating big, chunky, S’mores! YUM!

To your Parents: This is a fun activity that needs the participation of your child and you. It’s a time to bond with your kids and their friends. Help them set up the Spring Camp, and cook S’mores! Besides, this is way cheaper than an out-of-town summer camp.

How to Build the Spring Camp

Kids, make sure you ask mom and dad to help you with this. Be careful.

Materials for the Spring Camp:

1. Tent
2. Sleeping bags
3. Some pillows
4. Favorite toys like your ActionJet!, books, art materials, etc
5. Your Friends – Invite them to set up your tent and share the fun!

Build the tent in your backyard with the help of your parents. Roll out sleeping bags inside the tent. Bring in your favorite stuffs you’d like to share with your friends and neighborhood kids.

How to Cook S’mores

Ingredients for the S’mores:

1. Marshmallows
2. Chocolate candy bars
3. Graham crackers
4. Green sticks or coat angers
5. Bonfire (or barbecue grill)

Get 1 large graham cracker and break it in half. Cover half of the graham cracker with a chocolate bar.

Put 1-2 marshmallows on the stick and hold it over the fire until roasted. Get mom or dad to help you with this!

When the marshmallow is roasted, place on top of the chocolate bar, then put the other graham cracker on top and bite down.

Be careful: marshmallow is still hot!

Share the Spring Camp with your friends while munching on yummy S’mores!

And don’t forget to bring your favorite ActionJet toy, pilot! :)

Additional Note to Parents:

A Backyard Camp is a parent-organized, summer camp program that alternates between different neighborhood backyards. A teacher and assistant, hired by the families are responsible for providing opportunities for learning and play.
